How to spell out numeric value of currency in English words using Excel add-in?

Posted by Vishal G R on June 17, 2011 at 6:54 AM

My friend asked me if we have an option in Excel to spell out the numerals. After some Googling I found it is indeed possible!

Here is what you can do:

  1. Open the Excel file in which you want to spell out the numerals or currency.
  2. Press ALT+F11 to start the Visual Basic Editor.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Module.
  4. Copy + Paste the code from Pastie or Snipt into the module sheet.
  5. Now you can use the InWords function in the required cell as shown in the below image.

Note: This is a modified version of the code from Microsoft's KB213360 article to match Indian Currency requirement :)

Update about Add-In:

After this... many friends from accounting background kept asking me if there can be a simple way of doing this as they frequently use this in invoice, cheque printing, voucher printing and other things... The above procedure has limitations - for every new file created we need to follow all the above steps.

After some research I came to know we could actually create VB Add-Ins for Excel which can be enabled in all versions of Excel. I did exactly that - created an Add-In!

To make things simple:

  1. Download InWords.xla to your desktop.
  2. Copy InWords.xla from your desktop.
  3. Open MS Excel.
  4. For MS Excel 2010:

  5. Go to File > Options > Add-Ins
  6. Select Manage: Excel Add-Ins and click Go.
  7. For older versions:

  8. Go to Tools > Add-Ins
  9. Click browse and paste InWords.xla. (Note: The path would be usually ..\Microsoft\AddIns\)
  10. Select InWords.xla and click OK.
  11. Make sure check box is ticked against the InWords Add-In as shown in the picture.

That is it! Now you can use InWords function anytime in any file - existing/new without worries :) Enjoy!!! ;)
