Hidden International Themes & Wallpapers

Posted by Vishal G R on June 27, 2011 at 3:30 AM

While installing Windows 7 for the first time - you are asked to set the preferred language, time and currency. Based on your regional setting, it installs set of themes and wallpapers.

For example: If you set English (United States) as your time and currency format, the associated desktop backgrounds and themes are installed.

In this case other themes and wallpapers of other English-speaking countries -- Australia, Canada, Great Britain and South Africa are hidden. By default you can't access these backgrounds or themes. But below is a simple way to install and use them:

  • In the search box (in the Start menu), type C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT and press Enter. (assuming Windows 7 is installed in C:\ drive.)
  • You will see a list of subfolders under C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT:
    • MCT-AU, MCT-CA, MCT-GB, MCT-US, and MCT-ZA.
  • Each subfolder has themes and wallpapers for that specific country:
    • AU for Australia, CA for Canada, GB for Great Britain, US for the United States, and ZA for South Africa.
  • To use these wallpapers and themes, just go to its Theme folder and open the .theme file.

For example: If you want to use Great Britain theme, go to: C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT\MCT-GB\Theme\ and open GB.theme. This will create a shortcut of the theme in Personalization section of Control Panel.

Now its ready to use! :)

Ps: I have installed the Kung Fu Panda 2 theme from Microsoft's site. ;)
